I’d like to start off by saying that Gary Allen is one of today’s best country singers. He seems to have a gift for choosing great songs, though his current single isn’t a standout in his rich catalogue.
As always his voice is great. The lyrics are pretty good too. So, the big thing working against this song is the production. It’s a little too melo-dramatic and seems like it’s trying to drown out Allen’s voice at some points. The production is also overused in today’s country music. Maybe the fact that the production is so common might help “Today” become a big hit for Gary Allen. Even though he has much more worthy songs that deserved to be hits, I wouldn’t be angry at all if this song became a big hit on the country charts for him.
