– it is much more likable than “Girlfriend”, mainly because it’s much less obnoxious.
– The chorus is catchy.
The Bad:
– Somewhat grating.
– Weak lyrics.
– Further proof that Avril has abandoned everything she used to represent and has now become the kind of singer she so desperately tried to be an alternative to at the beginning of her career.

If one had done their research they would know that this single song off the new album does not represent the rest of the album and they would know this it was used as a transition from the past. The rest of the album is very different, and Avril is very proud of it, so to make a statement saying that “Avril has abandoned everything she used to represent” is not only naive and misinformed, but amateurish. The sheer slack of research used in this review is obvious and unfortunate, better luck next time.

I know Lavigne claims that “What The Hell” isn’t a reflection of what the rest of Goodbye Lullaby will sound like, but since the album hasn’t been released yet there is no proving that for certain. So based on this single and the majority of the songs from her last album, I don’t think it would be unfair to say that the Lavigne of today and the Lavigne of 2002 are two very different people.
